Twelve animals make up the chinese calendar. The version most accepted by the chinese is that when Buddha was meditating in the forest before his death, and asked the animals who would come to meditate with him. As only appeared twelve, in reward, he offered him a year at each one.
According to the legend
Is attributed the creation of the chinese calendar or lunar to the Jade Emperor, who was regarded as the ruler of the sky and one of the most important gods of the pantheon of taoist. About its history there are two versions.
The first says that he created the horoscope as a sign of gratitude to the twelve animals came to his call. The Emperor had ruled the Earth and the Sky, but as I had never visited the Earth, and I was curious to know the creatures that lived in she asked all who would run to the sky to see them better. Of all, only twelve did.
The second version, tells that the Jade Emperor wanted to create a horoscope with twelve animals and to do this he organized a race with various obstacles. During the race, each animal looked for a way to earn according to their skills and intelligence, and hence that the order of the calendar is formed according as they were reaching the goal.
The order is as follows: The rat, ox, tiger, rabbit, dragon, snake, then the horse, the goat, the monkey, the rooster, the dog and finally the pig.
A binary-cycle
The chinese calendar, known as yin and yang, with five elements –water, wood, fire, metal and earth – are a cycle of ten years, in which the pairs correspond to the yang and the odd yin. This composition forms a cycle of sixty years, and each one of these years contains an animal of the twelve existing, which, in turn, have five elements that modify the personality of the animal with sixty possibilities.

According to the mythology, the Jade Emperor, the rooster came in on tenth place. Belonging to this cycle are those born in the years 1909, 1921, 1933, 1945, 1957, 1969, 1981, 1993, 2005 and 2017.
